SCALE OF DIEPENHEIM
Driving through the languid landscapes which give Twente the appearance
of a closed open-air museum, we suddenly see a ramshackle sign.
In faded letters, it says, in the vernacular: Deep'n blif Deep'n, (Deep'n stays Deep'n).
Pondering the meaning of this cryptic battle-cry, we enter the little town of Diepenheim.
In the early days of the year 2000, an exception event is held there. In a
field at the edge of the town, artists, builders and residents together build a monument
to the people of Diepenheim. This monument is based around a concrete floor, consisting
of exactly 2742 blocks. Each block contains an official extract from Diepenheims's population register:
the Scale of Diepenheim.
